Fab stuff!
Unfortuanetly there are also many in the home-ed community who also have fixed (class based) ideas on who should home-ed :o(Louisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03536057826596510429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11652148.post-61803443086814068772007-04-03T19:34:00.000+01:002007-04-03T19:34:00.000+01:00Yup, travellers, single parents.. only a few minor...Yup, travellers, single parents.. only a few minority groups left out there :-(

It beggars belief.Gillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09707661738889563273noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11652148.post-27345345101163193602007-04-03T19:29:00.000+01:002007-04-03T19:29:00.000+01:00Hi Allie"33, 452, I think that Pete was pointing o...Hi Allie

"33, 452, I think that Pete was pointing out that *Myra Robinson* was using a stereotype to indicate class without having to say so outright. Thanks for pointing that out, Allie. And my apologies to Pete!

I do totally agree with the rest of what you say, Allie.

Mooney, certainly, makes it clear that his "concerns" are class related.

And the anti-traveller prejudice here is disgraceful. We've done a lot as a society to try to combat sexism, homophobia, and most racism, but prejudice against travellers seems to still be socially acceptable for some reason - appalling, isn't it? :(33, 452https://www.blogger.com/profile/05211879747055010173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11652148.post-9107556876274598762007-04-03T18:41:00.000+01:002007-04-03T18:41:00.000+01:0033, 452, I think that Pete was pointing out that *...33, 452, I think that Pete was pointing out that *Myra Robinson* was using a stereotype to indicate class without having to say so outright. Of course it would be ridiculous to assume that any of these characteristics could be used to define social class.

I think that this debate is all about class - with a bit of anti-traveller racism thrown in too. Both Mooney and Robinson clearly want to say that only middle class people can home ed. and they all but do say that.

What I find so offensive is the tone. The Robinson article, in particular, is SO patronising.
"How dare you be so uppity and exercise your rights. How dare you think that 'people like you' can know what is best for your children."

I am also concerned that the little tales she tells in that article could identify individuals. Such is her arrogance I can't imagine she's gone to much effort to disguise anyone.Alliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07432518528835330361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11652148.post-64199339294664007832007-04-03T16:59:00.000+01:002007-04-03T16:59:00.000+01:00Pete:You say"So, smokers can't home ed. To home ed, you must always get the children dressed before 11 am, especially if you have visitors.

Firstly, Ms Robinson, why not come out and say "only nice middle class people can home ed" because that's what you mean."

Erm... I know plenty of "nice, middle class people" who smoke, are lax in tidying up, and eat take aways. And I know plenty of "nice middle class people" whose kids sit around in their jim-jams all day. I don't get why you assume these things are necessarily indicative of a person's class? Aren't you stereotyping a bit here?

Carlotta:

Great article! And I mean yours, not Robinson's, obviously! :D33, 452https://www.blogger.com/profile/05211879747055010173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11652148.post-78106029592933669742007-04-03T14:37:00.000+01:002007-04-03T14:37:00.000+01:00Hi PeteI think you are quite right to question Rob...Hi Pete

I think you are quite right to question Robinson's assessment of education. The reason I didn't on this occasion, (even though I think it would be completely right to do so) is that I wanted to put the strongest possible case for the opposition in order to see that their proposed solutions for this sort of perceived problem could be refuted.

So given that there must be somewhere, some cases of educational neglect, (even if in the smoke-filled situation, there is no firm evidence that there was,) it is still not best practice to just keep insisting on more of same, ie: more monitoring, more assessments, more insistence on curricula and more issuing of school attendance orders.

Just doesn't make any sense in cases where traditional schooling has already failed so many children.Carlottahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12686469871331093679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11652148.post-16172284342882225632007-04-03T14:14:00.000+01:002007-04-03T14:14:00.000+01:00blimey, where do you start with that (I'd online s...blimey, where do you start with that (I'd online seen the cut down version online before)

" Recently I visited a mother and three children in a smoke-filled sitting room strewn with takeaway food packaging. The child concerned was not dressed at 11am although they were expecting me"

So, smokers can't home ed. People who are a bit lax with tidying and get take aways can't home ed. To home ed, you must always get the children dressed before 11 am, especially if you have visitors.

Firstly, Ms Robinson, why not come out and say "only nice middle class people can home ed" because that's what you mean.

Secondly, she's said nothing, not word one, about how those kids are learning.

"Typically, the child will have been withdrawn from school following an argument with the headteacher, often about his - usually it is a boy - disruptive behaviour"

Have you googled Robinson? At one point she puts school phobia along with teenage pregnancy and mental "stability" (not health, I note) issues as "problems which she had responsibility to deal with" for her LEA.

Because for her, school phobia is always an irrational response at best, and an excuse for slackness in most cases, rather than a perfectly reasonable response to unreasonable authority.

If insanity is forcing your perceptions of reality to match dogma, then we're dealing with crazy people.Pete Darbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01349118584166359618noreply@blogger.com
