A Real Choice?

I hadn't heard of Choice Advisors till Fiona N alerted us to this particular gem.

"Local authorities across England are set to share in over £9 million funding for the creation of a network of Choice Advisers who will support parents in choosing the right school for their child."

What on earth will the Choice Advisor in our area be doing, I wonder? There is a choice of precisely one secondary school around here. This institution is riddled with drugs, deliquent behaviour, violence, knives, poor expectations and results, and yet comes well within the top 500 state schools in the Times. I think I can cope with the choice this presents, thank you very much.

Am clinging to the hope that there are HEors out there willing to educate their Choice Advisor re the real option of Home Education.

  1. Our local LA has already agree to educate CAs about HE so that they can inform people about the right to HE, along with the promise of HE leaflets in children's centres - we shall watch and wait.

I had a 2 hour meeting with the Sheffield CA this morning.I took some comps of School is not compulsory and some home ed trifold leaflets with contact details and an idea of some of the many local groups/events so that CA has background info on home education. The CA is also going to find out from her line manager whether the service can guarantee to home ed enquirers that their personal details won't be passed on to Children Missing Education or the Elective Home Ed team (eg if one sib from unknown family wants to find out about school ) At present the CA database is independent of the others in the authority, but we'd need assurance in writing. Not sure if anyone would use it for that purpose, but it's the principle of the thing...Anyway, I'll keep you posted...

    Love, Fiona

  6. Yes, very sneaky, isn't it? Making people change their preferences to the ones they want them to have, is a pretty suspect practice...

Fiona, that's good work there; I hope you get those written reassurances! :)
